Peg + Cat Debuts on PBSKids

When I was first introduced to Peg + Cat at the PBS Annual meeting this past Spring, I was immediately smitten. A spunky little girl + a quirky cat + a math curriculum—what’s not to love? With its catchy songs, fantastic graphics, Peg + Cat, which debuts today on PBS Kids, will, no doubt, be an instant hit for the PBSKids core audience.

I love the fact that this new show, created by Jennifer Oxley and Billy Aronson, the minds behind Little Bill, The Wonder Pets and Rent and Postcards from Buster, respectively, has an emphasis on math and problem solving for the preschool/kindergarten set. The musical elements, including the catchy songs, guitar/ukelele and other accompanying instruments magnify the cuteness of Peg + Cat’s adventures.

Through their adventures, Peg + Cat not only help each other to solve problems, but learn from mistakes, which, in turn, teaches young minds the value of learning from mistakes and experimentation, as well as cooperation.

According to the creators of the show, the learning goals for Peg + Cat include: present age-appropriate concepts and math skills; broaden kids’ thinking about math; inspire creative problem solving; help kids see that math can be cool and inspiring.

I have a Kindergartener, and from just watching the first few episodes, it’s so interesting to see how close the stories from Peg + Cat are to my son’s actual lessons. Cylinders, sorting and counting to 100 are just a few of the many parallel lessons that I’ve seen so far.

The beautiful colors and endearing graphics set this new show apart. Because of its emphasis on math, there are geometric shapes throughout. The graph paper background is one of the show’s coolest graphic element to me. As a kid, I was an aspiring artist and creative mind, so I used to draw on graph paper every chance I got. It’s so cool to see an animated show “come to life” on graph paper. But more than anything, it’s awesome that graph paper still has significance in the digital age of art.

There’s so much to love about Peg + Cat and the conversation that this new property brings to the preschool arena. Beyond the first glimpse of this show, we’ve also had the chance to preview recipes, a well-planned partnership with Whole Foods and Peg + Cat’s other platforms. I will absolutely have more to share about Peg + Cat, but for now, check out the initial reading that the star of the show did during auditions.

TV Tuesday: Updates from Disney Junior, Nickelodeon, PBS Kids and The Hub

As we start to get into the back to school groove, the tv industry has been busy gearing up for new seasons, sparkly new shows and the release of a whole new host of characters.
In addition to other weekly features, I’m hoping to start a quick update on Tuesdays with the latest info on new shows and updates surrounding the characters we all know and love. Here’s a round up of what’s going on in the children’s tv:

Nickelodeon

Just in time for the dog days of summer, there’s a new show on Nickelodeon that focuses on a six pack of rescue pups. Nickelodeon’s new CG-animated preschool series Paw Patrol is where, “no job is too big, no pup is too small.”

The rescue pups, Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma and Skye, led by a tech-savvy boy named Ryder, features a curriculum of citizenship, social skills and problem-solving. To underscore the show’s theme of responsibility and humane treatment of animals, and in conjunction with the Paw Patrol launch, Nickelodeon has partnered with the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Disney

Doc McStuffins has hit the road with a tricked out Airstream Trailer, dubbed the Doc Mobile. The hit show emphasizes good health and compassion through stories of a young girl, who cares for her ailing stuffed animals and other toys.

The Doc Mobile features an area for kids to perform a “check-up” on their own toys plus other activities and age-appropriate health and wellness lessons including nutrition and physical development and fitness. The Doc Mobile makes a stop in NYC tomorrow at the Disney Store in Times Square from 10 am- 4pm

Doc McStuffins’ season two premieres on Friday, September 6, with upcoming stars including: Geena Davis, Jeffrey Tambor, Tony Hale, Molly Shannon, Sutton Foster, Amy Sedaris and Peter MacNicol.

Labor Day is “Neighbor Day” on PBS KIDS with the premiere of an all new episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood on Monday, September 2. In honor of #Neighborday, PBS Kids is offering a free episode download on iTunes. Be sure to snatch this up before the offer ends on September 3.
And speaking of Daniel Tiger awesomeness, it was recently announced that Daniel Tiger Toys will be at Toys R Us Exclusively next month. These highly anticipated toys are made by JAKKS Pacific, and include plush, playsets and collectible figures featuring the star of the animated TV series, Daniel Tiger, and his friends, Katerina Kittycat, Miss Elaina, Prince Wednesday and O the Owl.

In addition to the toys, other merchandise includes games and puzzles from University Games, books from Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing imprint Simon Spotlight and personalized t-shirts available on Toysrus.com and at Toys“R”Us Times Square through partner Ty’s Toy Box. Among the initial lineup of toys announced, I’m particularly excited about Neighborhood Trolley with Daniel Tiger figure and Daniel Tiger and friends plush! I’ll have a more in-depth feature on PBS soon, but I’m super excited about this DT news.

Hub

Over at The Hub, they’re looking beyond back to school and end of summer fun and highlighting Halloween. The Hub announced that Martha Stewart will appear as the Halloween expert as part of the panel of celebrity judges scheduled to participate in the network’s nationwide costume competition on the “Hub Network’s First Annual Halloween Bash,” to be broadcast Saturday, October 26.

The channel is encouraging viewers to enlist their imagination and creativity for this unique costume contest. Submissions began Friday, August 16 and 50 semi-finalists representing each state in America will win a trip to Los Angeles to be a part of the two-hour event. One lucky winner will take home $25,000 and will have a chance at a walk-on role on the Hub Network’s Daytime Emmy Award-winning series, “R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series.”
The competition is open to all ages, including individuals or a maximum of five people per group submission. Participants are encouraged to create eye-popping, hair-raising and spooky costumes within one of the following six categories:

· Howl-arious – Shows the lighter side of Halloween with a take on a fun, funny or otherwise hilarious costume.

· Spook-tacular – Get ready to frighten America by showcasing the most spine-chilling costume for all the ghosts and ghouls out there.

· Mad Genius – Unique, original, innovative and never seen before. A knight in
armor fashioned from bottle caps, bat wings made from old umbrellas, or a
cardboard-box jetpack, the possibilities are endless. Display a costume unlike
any other — show your Mad Genius.

· Blast from the Past – Take a stroll down memory lane with a timeless costume. Memories, nostalgia and yesteryear brought to life. Show your take on great figures from before the 20thcentury or a retro 50’s sock hop get up, 60’s flower child or other “period” inspired costumes.

· Animal Kingdom – Transform into a living creature from the past or present. Be a roaring lion, a school of jellyfish, a firefly, or a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

· Everyday Stuff – We’re looking for the coolest refrigerator/freezer, remote control, mailbox, block of Swiss cheese, telephone and more. Be creative and transform the ordinary into the extra-ordinary.

2013 PBS Annual Meeting Highlights

Words can’t adequately convey the gratitude and overall excitement I’ve experienced over the past week. From Disney to PBS Kids and through the platform I’ve created on this corner of the Internet, I was bestowed the honor of participating in conferences hosted by the aforementioned.
Perhaps you’ve seen the influx of tweets and Instagram images I’ve shared from my journey, but in case you haven’t, I thought I’d share just a quick pictorial recap of my PBS annual meeting.

As a PBS Kids VIP, together with a group of like minded parent influencers, I was afforded the opportunity to sit in a variety of sessions and breakout sessions to learn more about what’s on the horizon for PBS shows and digital properties.

On day one, we met the newest cast member of Sesame Street. The character, Mando, is a bilingual writer who will explore his creativity and hone his appreciation for culture in the venerable show’s 44th season.

During one of our breaks, I received a text from the husband at home, who showed off a Cat in the Hat craft that my big boy just completed. Seconds later, I bumped into the Cat himself. I love it when my life comes full circle like that!

Today, we learned all about Peg + Cat, the adorable new preschool series that has an emphasis on math. I’ll speak more in detail about this awesome new show, but I’m especially excited about the great music, digital platforms that will parallel the show and of course, the super funny characters, Peg and her BFF, Cat.

Along the way, I met Mr. Steve and Wilder Valderrama, too! I have much much more to report, but will share as soon as I get back!

Curious George Swings into Spring on PBS Kids on Earth Day

Everyone’s favorite monkey is helping us to usher in spring today, just in time for Earth Day. Curious George, like most of us, has spring fever after a long winter.

As usual, George finds himself in quite the predicament in the new PBS Kids movie, “Curious George Swings into Spring.” As he finds his way, George is able to enjoy and learn about the beauty of spring firsthand.

To prepare for Curious George’s “Swing into Spring” hour-long movie that coincides with Earth Day celebrations, we did some fun outdoor activities. After all, the best way to learn for the little guys is to do it hands-on, especially if it involves getting dirty!

We’re getting the groove of this suburban thing, which includes a new-found appreciation for gardening. The whole family gets into planting flowers, working on the lawn and cultivating a garden.

As part of this fun Curious George promo, our friends at PBS Kids sent us a fantastic spring care package, that included materials for planting tomato, as well as instructions for a fun bird feeder that incorporates recycled materials.

Together with our other plants, we planted our tomatoes last week. As we were working on the garden and seedlings today, we noticed the tiniest sprout! We’ve been careful to plant and keep our pots in sunlight and out of harm’s way. We’re looking forward to see the wonderful fruit it will bear!

We enjoyed today’s beautiful sunshine by building a bird feeder from a recycled soda bottle. After cleaning out the bottle, punching several holes for the twine at the top and holes to position the chopstick to act as a perch, we then filled the bottle with seeds. After closing the bottle and flipping it over, we found a perfect spot to hang our new feeder right outside our window. We’ll be watching for birds to come visit!

As our buddy Curious George reminds us, it’s important to embrace spring and to enjoy nature as often as we can! After checking out Curious George’s Swing into Spring, make sure you make time to go for a walk or find a special way enjoy the outdoors on Earth Day and every day.

Dinosaur Train Submarine Adventure Debuts on PBS

Buddy and the Dinosaur Train gang are heading out on yet another educational adventure. This time, the dinosaurs will head out to sea on a new vessel, the Dinosaur Train Submarine, where they’ll learn about sea creatures from the Dinosaur Age. In their travels, the dinosaurs will see things they’ve never seen such as, Otto Ophthalmosaurus to Archelon turtles.

On February 18, PBS Kids will showcase The Jim Henson Company’s Dinosaur Train Submarine Adventure, which is an hour-long feature. To coincide with the hour-long adventure, Dinosaur Train will also feature new content online and on mobile devices. The special will also be available on DVD starting February 19 for $9.99.

As water lovers, we loved learning about the amazing sea creatures from the Dinosaur Age. Being under the sea with the Dinosaur Gang was a fun change of pace and, not surprisingly, educational and eye-opening. Since it’s debuting today on PBS, if you’re home with the kids for President’s Day, make sure you tune in for this fun feature. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Debuts on PBS Kids

There’s a new kid in town, and Daniel Tiger’s his name. With his vibrant stories and fresh perspective on things, Daniel Tiger is set to bring new smiles to preschoolers and their parents. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood offers young viewers a kid’s-eye view of his life, while exploring social and emotional topics.

A spinoff of everyone’s favorite neighbor, Daniel Tiger is a new dimension of sorts of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. This new animated series, which debuts on PBS Kids, September 3, is the brainchild of Angela Santomero (who brought us Super Why and Blue’s Clues) and produced by The Fred Rogers Company.

At this year’s PBS Annual conference held in Denver earlier this year, I sat with my fellow PBS Kids VIPs and learned about Daniel Tiger firsthand from the creator. As the son of the original program’s Daniel Striped Tiger, Daniel Tiger is an homage to Santomero’s childhood hero. I remembered just how significant Mister Rogers was to me, too, as I got the chills listening to Mrs. Rogers speak of her husband’s legacy, and got teary-eyed from a montage of memorable shows that helped shaped childrens’ media as we know it.

Recent research proves what Fred Rogers knew all along: social and emotional competencies are the building blocks of doing well in school and in life.

Daniel Tiger explores topics that are relatable to the preschool set, often emotions that young kids can’t quite understand, such as disappointment. The show uses a musical element in the form of cute songs to reinforce the theme.

With Biggie being a preschooler and having experienced our fair share of emotional ups and downs this year, the introduction of Daniel Tiger couldn’t have come at a better time. Even before our screener arrived Biggie discovered Daniel Tiger on the PBS Video Player app and has been watching Daniel Tiger nonstop. Life’s little lessons as discussed on each episodes truly influence my preschooler who has been having anxiety issues. Since he can relate to Daniel Tiger, we’ve used his smart advice as conversation starters and also to reinforce certain lessons during some more trivial times. When Biggie was asked to try something new and sleep with his bedroom lights off, like a big boy, at first he resisted. But when I asked him what he thought Daniel Tiger would do when he was asked to try something new, he said Daniel Tiger would probably say, “Calm down and give it a try.”

As someone immersed in children’s products and media every day by choice, there’s nothing I love more than seeing something awesome and educational come into fruition as a parent and as a part of the media. And the fact that this show is heavily influenced by Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, a show that helped shape my own childhood is purely amazing, and being able to enjoy his legacy through the eyes of my kids is surreal. I can’t wait to watch more of Daniel Tiger and to report back on the other episodes, apps and site!

Sesame Street Debuts What I Am, Anthem for Little Children, Big Challenges

It may have been the unofficial start to summer, but beyond BBQs and beach time, this past weekend was a time to celebrate those who serve and have served in our military. A product of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Merchant Marines, military service was the glue that held my family together. My dad’s service brought him to the U.S., provided for our family and ultimately, put me through college. I count my lucky stars every day, and now that the Big Kid is old enough to comprehend the military and our service men and women, I felt that it was our duty to help better educate him on the topic.

In line with Memorial Day celebrations, this past Saturday, some characters from Sesame Street performed on The Intrepid, as part of the launch of its newest outreach initiative, Little Children, Big Challenges. This educational message is quite relevant for military, veteran, and other families with young children, to help increase self-awareness, boost self-esteem, and help children persevere through changes.

With my dad in the Navy, as a young girl, saying goodbye for months at a time was quite common. As a result, separation and uncertainty are issues that still sting to this day, but as a parent now, I’m so glad to know there are helpful outlets that can cushion the blow. In the reality that is our world, military families face so many adversities, and sadly, separation is sometimes the smallest of their worries; it’s comforting to know that Sesame Street provides an outlet that embraces these feelings that sometimes only military families can understand.

I was honored to be onhand on the Intrepid with my own family to capture the debut of the anthem of this latest outreach, What I Am, sung by American Idol alum, Matt Rogers. As fun as it was to cheer and laugh along with Elmo, Rosita, Gordon and Matt, it was the Quantico Marine Corps Band accompaniment that gave us all the chills. Listening to the band accompany this Sesame Street performance, penned for families going through changes, I have to say, was quite moving and memorable, to say the least.

Because Fleet Week festivities were wrapping up at the Intrepid, we were able to take part in a few educational activities. The Big Kids most favorite activity was building his own boat, with supplies and directions supplied by the Navy’s ONR. The Big Kid crafted his boat with Play-Doh, an oversized straw and construction paper mast, as best as a four year old could do, but let’s just say, he wont be a naval architect any time soon.

Our day at the Intrepid, listening to the Sesame Street performance and checking out all the military-related activities was a fun outing; but most importantly, it was the beginning of a dialogue with our children about the importance of our military, and just how much our service men and women and their families mean to us. We will always salute you.

PBS 2012 Annual Meeting: What’s New For PBS Kids

This week I’m so honored to be attending the PBS Annual Meeting in Denver as one of the PBS Kids VIPs (Very Involved Parents.) As a parent ambassador for PBS Kids, alongside a number of influential social media colleagues in the parenting space, I’ve been listening in on several sessions and interacting with some of the brains behind the educational programming at PBS Kids.

Over the years, perhaps you’ve read about how I’ve been to Sesame Street, learned about how SS is ahead of the curve in the educational digital space, hung out with the Electric Company, met Super Why’s creators, shared dessert with Curious George and more. PBS Kids has always embraced bloggers and social media, so I’m beyond thrilled to continue our growing relationship as a VIP.

A fan and advocate for smart, yet cutting edge programming for children, this ambassadorship is, perhaps, one of the most exciting opportunities I’ve participated in to date. It’s beyond inspiring and uplifting to listen to these incredibly creative people behind the shows our kids love.

What I love most about what I do, is that I get to share this information with like-minded parents on my social media outlets, but also, I get to use my voice in this parenting space as an advocate for children’s media.

With two kids, media intake and the content being absorbed, is something I take very seriously. I’ve always championed shows that embody educational, social and creative values that I already teach at home. Excellent programming, to me, supplements the lessons I already advocate at home. With fantastic shows like Super Why, Curious George, Cat in the Hat, the Wild Kratts and more, it goes without saying, PBS Kids’ programming happily fills our mornings in between our own preschool-friendly activities.

So, on the docket over the next few days, I will be learning more about the new show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, listening in on the general session called, “It’s a New Day in the Neighborhood,” and of course, network with my fellow VIPs, as well as meet some exciting Movers and Shakers behind the properties at PBS Kids.

Halloween Episodes on PBS Kids are Spooky but Fun

With the excitement that Halloween brings with it, not surprisingly, kid programming is joining in on the ghoulish fun! PBS Kids, an NKT fave, always does a great job on incorporating educational episodes while sharing seasonal shows, and Halloween is no different.

Last week, as part of PBS Kids’ Halloween-inspired programming, the animal exploration series, Wild Kratts, (think: Animal Planet for the grade school set) highlighted all kinds of creatures during Predator Week. The Kratt brothers explored fierce predators such as great white sharks, wolves, cheetahs and raptors. With Great Whites in the news so much recently, the episodes from Predator Week couldn’t be more timely. Be sure to keep an eye out for these fun episodes.

On Dinosaur Train, the kids set off for an adventure at the Haunted Roundhouse and explore the spookiness of the “unknown.” Like many families do as part of an Autumn rite of passage, in the Big Pond Pumpkin Patch, the dinosaurs learn all about gourds, pumpkins and everything else that makes the pumpkin patch so fun.

On The Cat in the Hat Knows a lot About That! Nick, Sally and Cat go trick or treating and learn about some fruity non, candy treats. They also meet a “scary” creature who teaches them a few new things, including how he eats bugs!

Everyone’s favorite inquisitive scientist in training, Sid The Science Kid, encounters his own scary adventures in the “Halloween Spooky Science Special.

We’re a fan of most of the shows on PBS Kids, whether they’re geared to the preschooler or not, so we always find these holiday-themed shows a great way to learn even more about how everyone celebrates these fun holidays, even the animals! After screening these Halloween-themed episodes, I learned that my guy is totally mesmerized by The Wild Kratts, even though it’s targeted to the older crowd (ages 8 and up). The episodes were a perfect primer for our recent trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom; he even took away some of the lessons he learned from the show and applied them to our visit!

On a related note, last week, PBS Kids launched 40 new games which are aimed to help children ages 2-8 build critical math skills. The games comprise PBS Kids’ largest offering of interactive math content for preschoolers to date. The games are centered around various PBS Kids media properties, ranging from Curious George to Sid the Science Kid.

My guy is a huge fan of Curious George’s Monkey Jump. Jumping, counting and Curious George? Count him in! These are the kind of games that will be sure to keep us busy when we start hibernating!

Yo Gabba Gabba Live Hits NYC and NJ + Giveaway

DJ Lance, Muno, Brobee, Foofa, Toodee, Plex and their friends are at it again! The crew from the wildly popular Nickelodeon Show, Yo Gabba Gabba are on the road once again, this time hitting 50 stops across the U.S. for their Yo Gabba Gabba Live Show.

If you’ve been following NKT for the past few years, then you already know that our whole family are big time YGG fans. From entire family Halloween costumes to interviewing Christian Jacobs, one of the creators of the show, who is also the lead singer of the Aquabats, Yo Gabba Gabba is near and dear to our hearts. And judging from the show’s ongoing popularity, many of you probably feel the same!

We reference “There’s a Party in My Tummy” more times than we can count, not to mention, the music featured on the show has found its way onto our playlist. So, needless to say, we’re beyond thrilled that Yo Gabba Gabba will be in NYC/NJ within the next few weeks! On their first tour, we absolutely enjoyed seeing them at Beacon Theatre in NYC, where quite a few super cool celebs made cameos at the live NYC show! I can’t wait to see who will be visiting the Gabba Friends’ live tour when they make their stops at NYC and NJ. And speaking of the Garden State…
