Last night, our family enjoyed watching the Grammys, which was, perhaps, one of our most favorite award shows in a long time. Amidst all the fabulous winners, crazy and entertaining performances, there were, of course, a few relevant categories to NKT.
To be a little more specific, Ziggy Marley won the Grammy for best musical album for children. Marley, now a five-time Grammy Award winner after last night’s win, released his Family Time cd in May 2009. The album is a diverse collection of reggae-influenced songs.
Marley tapped the likes of kiddie fan favorites such as Jack Johnson for Cry, Cry, Cry and Laurie Berkner in Future Man, Future Lady (my personal fave.) And what’s a family-inspired album without family? Marley’s mom and daughter joined Ziggy on the first two tracks.
Melodic, breezy and offering a nice range in tempo, Family Time, from the small sample I heard, was well worth the Grammy win. As I read in an article, my main takeaway from Ziggy Marley’s cd could be summed up by this,
” But unlike many kid-oriented records, this one offers the right balance of music and message to make it enjoyable for the entire family. “
According to that same article, Family Time was not Ziggy’s first foray in children’s music. Did you know he performed the theme song to the PBS series “Arthur,” and supplied some tunes for “Dora the Explorer” and makes frequent appearances on Nick Jr.?
Though we don’t officially own this one, it sounds like a must-download!
The other nominees in this category were:
American Heroes #3, Jonathan Sprout; Banjo To Beatbox, Cathy & Marcy With Special Guest Christylez Bacon; Great Day from Milkshake; Jumpin’ & Jammin’ from Greg & Steve; Pete Seeger Tribute – Ageless Kids’ Songs from Buck Howdy
I loved that one of our faves, Milkshake was up for a Grammy! Way to go! As an aside, Milkshake is a Maryland-based band, so if they’re ever in your area, go check them out! We checked them out last winter and had the best time!
