Happy Summer + Camp Warner Bros, Here We Come!

Happy summer, friends! I’m sure you guys are just as thrilled for the summer as we are! After all that distance learning and pandemic teaching, I’m so excited to let loose and enjoy these carefree summer days.

Camp Warner Bros towel

Since most of our camps and activities for the summer have been canceled, we’ve been on the hunt for fun activities. Well, lucky us, we were invited to participate in Camp Warner Bros! With Camp Warner Bros, we’ll be doing various activities and checking out several Warner Bros movies and shows over the next few weeks.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be checking out LEGO DC, Steven Universe, We Bare Bears: The Movie and so much more. With each movie or show, we’ll be sharing a fun activity with you! I plan to share our shenanigans over on TikTok, so be on the look out over there!

Our first activity was a super fun tie die kit with our camp shirts. I love how they turned out—so much so, we did a TikTok to show them off! Be sure to follow along on the #CampWarnerBros hashtag.

King Kong on Broadway is a Mesmerizing, Unforgettable Production

It’s been a blustery few weeks here in NYC/NJ. Despite the snow last week, my older son and I had the chance to check out King Kong on Broadway. Technology, choreography combined with Broadway flair, King Kong was quite the production, and one that blew my 11 year old away.

King Kong
King Kong

King Kong on Broadway followed a similar storyline to that of the classic. With the magic of a computerized backdrop and projector, the main settings took place in 1930s NYC, SS Wanderer and Skull Island. Each major backdrop was seamlessly projected to set the stage and create an unmistakable story surrounding the iconic settings. We were most impressed with SS Wanderer and how the audience was taken “onboard” Carl Denham and Ann Darrow’s excursion to Skull Island. The way the stage morphed into the bow of a ship was so unique and truly a sight to see.

The main sight of this show, was, hands-down, King Kong. This massive animatronic Gorilla descended onto the stage with an undeniable presence. Together with the orchestra’s accompaniment and the troupe who make King Kong come to life, the larger than life Gorilla made heads turned and jaws drop with every scene he shook. With the animated back drop, impeccable lighting and the King’s Company who worked together to control his every movement, King Kong was a believable Gorilla and a thrill to watch.F96E4C56-23C8-4A23-A7A8-44F410EE1636

Christiani Pitts who played Ann Darrow is a beautiful and commanding lead. To share the stage with a two-ton animatronic Gorilla is no easy feat, however, Pitts pulled it off with grace. Eric William Morris’ Carl Denham was an entertaining, albeit smarmy producer. The vocals were collectively a beautiful production, but King Kong was definitely the star of this show.

King Kong
King Kong

After the show, we were treated to a talkback with several members of the cast. From this intimate chat, we learned quite a bit about the cast, including how they spend upwards to 7 hours a day practicing and training to make the show come together. We were able to get a little more perspective on Kong and how the King’s Company Ensemble must thrust, jump and maneuver themselves to make Kong come to life. The cast members who operate as the VooDoo Operators control the facial movements by computers from a room above. All of the people who are in the King’s Company range from break dancers, dancers, performers, but none other than one of the VooDoo operators were puppeteers before this show.

Above all, King Kong was unique and often mesmerizing, if not quirky. The namesake of the show provided an unforgettable spectacle, and a production that will wow even the young Broadway goers.

Thomas & Friends Partners with the United Nations to Share Global Citizenship

It’s as important as ever to help teach our littlest global citizens the importance of equality, diversity and other principals that will help guide the to create a more inclusive society. Together with the UN, one of our favorites, Thomas & Friends, has heeded this importance to create a dialogue about global citizenship.

I was lucky enough to be onhand at the recent press conference that shared Thomas and Friends’ latest initiative.

7598285360 IMG 8032

The event discussed how the UN and the producers of Thomas & Friends worked together to integrate elements of the Sustainable Development Goals, covering themes from Gender equality to clean water, in preschool-friendly way.  They also focused on why it’s important to start educating children at the earliest ages about these issues.

IMG 7912

I’ll be sure to share more about this very important topic and how Thomas & Friends is sharing this message.

The United Nations and Mattel’s iconic Thomas & Friends series have teamed up on a first ever collaboration of this scope between a kid’s television show and the United Nations in an effort to further inspire preschoolers to become true global citizens. On Friday, September 7th at the United Nations Headquarters,  they co-hosted a roundtable event to bring awareness to the importance of inspiring the next generation of global citizens, starting at an early age.  Moderated by Pamela S. Falk, U.N. Resident Correspondent of CBS News TV & Radio, panelists included actress, filmmaker, and activist Olivia Wilde, Director of the Outreach Division in the United Nations Department of Public Information Maher Nasser, Senior Producer of Thomas & Friends Ian McCue, UN Women’s Africa Programme Advisor Tolulope Lewis-Tamoka, and President and COO of Mattel Richard Dickson.

Hollywood Darlings Q&A and Meet and Greet in NJ

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a fun meet and greet with the stars of PopTV’s Hollywood Darlings. The super funny cast of Hollywood Darlings was onhand at the West Orange, NJ Xfinity store to meet fans, take photos and chat with fellow bloggers and me. The lovely Jodie Sweetin (Full House), Beverley Mitchell (7th Heaven) and Christine Lakin (Step By Step) were so gracious to answer a handful of questions for us. These ladies were all so engaging and hysterical, and  relatable moms. Their fun personalities shined just as they do in their show!

HollywoodDarlings1

I was one of the first ones to ask a question. And while I could’ve asked anything, I chose to ask the ladies about social media and authenticity. I asked them what their thoughts are on keeping it real on social media. In the day and age where so many stars and influencers are faking it to make it online, how do they stay transparent for their audience? Jodie Sweetin, tackled this topic with such poise. In essence, Sweetin told us that what you see is what you get. She is a casual kind of person, so she often posts realistic photos of herself online. The other two stars chimed in and said at the end of the day, they’re all moms who get it.

hollywooddarlings2

With so many kids and adults who admire them, I’m so glad they grasp the importance of authenticity and transparency.

While we could’ve chatted for hours, I totally enjoyed listening to Sweetin, Mitchell and Lakin share their thoughts on the show and how it came about. I’ll have a video to share on YT soon, so keep an eye out for that!

As part of this fun event, we were treated to mini makeovers with the Glam Squad, as well as a cool photo booth! So fun and glam! Thanks for the fun treat.

IMG 8871

Hollywood Darlings is a hilarious show that’s classified as an Improv Comedy. It’s not a full-on reality show, but a fun comedy that follows these three talented actors. Hollywood Darlings airs on Wednesdays at 8p.m. on PopTV. Check your listings for channels.

Second Season of Timeless on NBC Features History, Action and Adventure

When it comes to strong female leads, NBC has a knack for showcasing the best of them. Ahead of its second season premiere on March 11, Timeless held a premiere event this week at the New York Historical Society in NYC. A nod to the prominence of history throughout the show, the New York Historical Society was a great fit for this event and celebration for Timeless’ second season. Thumbnail large Timeless’ premise combines action and adventure, which makes for an exciting science-fi and educational show. The ensemble cast stars Abigail Spencer as Lucy Preston, Matt Lanter as Wyatt Logan and Malcolm Barrett as Rufus Carlin as they endure challenges to help stop Rittenhouse from changing the course of American history. IMG 8868 In honor of the second season premiere, I was invited to participate in a roundtable Q&A with Abigail Spencer; costume designer, Mari-An Ceo; and Executive Producers, Marney Hochman and Arika Lisanne Mittmann.  In line with Women’s History Month and Lucy Preston’s fearless persona, the topic of powerful women came up quite a bit during our Q&A. Spencer elaborated on how Lucy’s most powerful asset is her brain: “I think we are really intentional with Lucy on Timeless in how she looks and we are careful not to sexualize her. She’s beautiful, but she’s brilliant. The producers pitched it to me that way: her superpower is her brain. I wanted her to start out that way. I wanted her to feel very normal so when she’s having to do these extraordinary things.” IMG 8836 Timeless includes unique stories and historical events, where the research and details contribute to the authenticity. With time traveling, the clothes and accessories contribute to the charm of Timeless. The costumes are so well-planned, that even the undergarments match the time period.  When asked about her favorite time period, costume designer, Mari-An Ceo said: “All of them; how do we learn about women. I have that amazing experience, to go in, read a script, and have to quickly go in and learn about that era. I may know that part of history, but then when you get into these scripts you really have to know where the hemline is. It’s so fun.” IMG 8592 We had the chance to check out the details in the costumes, which showed just how intricate and detailed the costumes are in Timeless. IMG 8872 In the second season of Timeless, Lucy and her team head on even more adventures to help save the world. In the first episode of this season, Lucy finds herself trying to save the world, not knowing the outcome of her last dilemma. Lucy heads off to World War I, alongside of her mom and sister, where they have to save a soldier. During their mission, they encounter Marie Curie and her daughter, Irene. Lucy uses her instincts to help unravel the deceptive Rittenhouse mission, all while learning from Marie Curie and her technology. The second season of Timeless is especially significant since the show was briefly cancelled. When asked how it feels to be back, Spencer explained: “I feel grateful for being given another go at it and we are so grateful to the fans it was really their love and their rabid appetite for the show. So when you come at it with that attitude, it’s nice.  You see that this is the real test of the show. I would say for us to do it again people are not going to watch the show and we’d love to do it again for sure. I think this season is better.” IMG 8823 After interviewing Abigail Spencer, Mari-An Ceo and executive producers, Marney Hochman and Arika Lisanne Mittmann, my interested was officially piqued. After watching the first episode of the second season of Timeless, I am officially hooked on this show that celebrates women, diversity and history, while encouraging the power of knowledge, STEM and strength in team work. If you enjoy history, adventure and unique stories, be sure to catch Timeless on NBC on Sunday at 10pm!

Watch PBS Kids 24/7

Earlier this month, PBS Kids, the pioneers in children’s programming, introduced a new TV channel and a live stream on digital platforms. PBS stations across the nation are able to broadcast PBS Kids shows like Curious George and Wild Kratts 24 hours a day on an additional television channel and offer a live stream. Kids will have their favorite PBS Kids shows during primetime and after school, or really, whenever they might need it!

Nielsen data demonstrates that live TV is the dominant way children access video, accounting for 68% of the time children spend watching video content.  And most of kids’ TV viewing takes place on weeknights and weekend afternoons and evenings – especially within low-income families, underscoring PBS’ mission to reach all children with high quality, educational content.

Families will be able to access the new channel on-the-go with the digital live stream which complements on-demand clips and full episodes. Viewers will be able to watch the station-branded live stream through pbskids.org and on the PBS KIDS Video App, which is available on a variety of mobile devices, tablets and over-the-top platforms such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox One and Chromecast.

DanielTigersNeighborhoodBugged

PBS Kids is a staple in our home. Since we’re constantly on the go, I love that my little guy can access his favorite shows while he’s waiting for big bro to finish up his sports. For a kiddo with speech delays and unique needs, I’m so grateful that we have access to such excellent programming at home and on the go, regardless of the time of day. Bravo PBS Kids!

Kevin Can Wait Q&A and Set Tour

Last week, I had the unique opportunity to visit the set of Kevin Can Wait, CBS’ new hit comedy starring Kevin James and Erinn Hayes. As a longtime Kevin James fan, I was so thrilled to get a closer look at what it takes to make this funny new show and to hear the stars thoughts on the story, upcoming episodes and much more.

IMG 0404

Just an hour outside of Manhattan, Kevin Can Wait is filmed at Goldcoast Studios in Bethpage, NY. The show’s premise revolves around James’ character, a middle aged, newly retired cop who is excited about finally focusing on himself, after years of working long hours protecting others. Much to his dismay, Kevin’s focus on himself quickly shifts to everyone else, including his kids’ various needs.

IMG 0405

James plays a lovable, yet flawed and extremely relatable Kevin. His counterpart, Donna, played by Erinn Hayes, is a likable working mom hoping to find her own balance. Together, their chemistry and storylines make for a comical portrayal of a middle class family and enduring the highs and lows of life.

IMG 0429

Our Q&A was hosted by accomplished director and equally funny Andy Fickman. Fickman read our questions to Kevin and Erinn, while interjecting his own commentary in between. We learned about how Kevin grew up in Long Island, and how his character is based off of one of his friends. Erinn shared that she, herself, is a working mom whose family is still on the west coast. She relates to the juggle and trying to make it work.

IMG 0433

I’ve participated in another junket with Kevin James, and just as one would suspect, he is just as funny as the characters he portrays. He’s obviously not as physical and bumbling as his comedy; he carries himself professionally and is a much more subdued person than the silly characters we know. I had no idea that he is a father of 4, but as always, I enjoyed chatting about how he loves the Mets.

IMG 0400

Since we have baseball on the brain with the World Series going on, one of my questions had to do with the Mets. I said, since your love for the Mets is like a secondary character in your films and shows, will there be a Mets cameo on Kevin Can Wait?

D1e0410f37436064 1Photo credit: CBS Television

As soon as I asked this question, it’s as if the Mets heard me over in Flushing and revealed a teaser of none other than Noah Syndergaard dressed up as a Viking on the Kevin Can Wait set. So, tonight, in time for Halloween, beloved pitcher, Syndergaard, who is also nicknamed ‘Thor’ will have a cameo as a Viking who has an altercation with Chale, Kevin’s daughter’s fiancé. When I told my husband and sons this news, I think they squealed louder than I did!

I’ll have more to share from my Q&A and set tour, but for now don’t forget to tune in tonight to check out the crazy shenanigans on Kevin Can Wait. Kevin Can Wait airs on Mondays at 8pm on CBS.

Full disclosure: I was invited to participate in this set tour and Q&A. I received a stipend for my participation. As always, all opinions on NKT are my own.

Disney Fantasia: Live in Concert at NJPAC on2/19 + Giveaway

We truly can’t get enough of Disney in our house. Combine Disney with the symphony, now we’re talking. We have great accessibility to wonderful performances and shows in our area, including those at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC).

DisneyLarge

On February 19, NJPAC will be featuring Disney Fantasia: Live in Concert. Disney Fantasia is a live performance that combines classical music with two beloved Disney movies. This performance will feature the Czech National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ted Sperling, which accompanies scenes from the animated feature films, Fantasia and Fantasia 2000.

To accompany the symphony, clips from Disney’s iconic films will be shown ion the big screen, such as Mickey Mouse as he dabbles in magic in Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the mythical unicorns and winged horses that accompany Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pastoral”).

Bergen County’s Elisabeth Morrow School Orchestra Students will be the opening performers, where students ranging from 11- 14 years old will perform Vivaldi, Beethoven and more as the opening act. Biggie and Littles would, for sure, enjoy the magic of this show, especially seeing student musicians perform as the openers.
