Holiday Shopping: There’s an App for That!

As we’re in the throes of reviews and prepping for the upcoming holidays, I’ve also been busy scoping out the sales and deals.  I not only love the impending holiday season and excitement surrounding the festivities, like so many others, I get such a thrill from the anticipation of the glorious day: the family, food, fun, celebration and of course, gifts.  I absolutely love giving gifts, so naturally, I love shopping for those gifts just as much.

The holidays go beyond the commercialism and overindulgence.  In fact, I truly believe in streamlining the shopping process as much as possible in order to enjoy the festivities later on.  The most obvious tips: shop early and shop online as much as possible.  But for those of you who much prefer the brick and mortar shopping experience, there are many ways to save money and sanity.  And of course, there’s an app for that!

Here are just a few of my favorite mobile shopping and list-making apps, which are perfect for shopping in general and quite timely for holiday shopping.

Pinterest

In lieu of a paper and pen, this year I’ve turned to Pinterest to bookmark potential presents and gift ideas for my guys.  I’ve been pinning presents onto my list, usually directly from the retailer’s site.  Most social media savvy retailers now have Pinterest icons, which makes list-making easy while you’re at home.  But when you’re on the go, pulling up said lists are convenient when accessing the Pinterest app.  The camera option on the Pinterest app comes in handy if you want to add an object that you see at a store.  I always make it a habit to take photos of cool things I want in a store.  With Pinterest’s camera capability, I can actually catalog those photos on my boards.

image
Pinterest just keeps getting better and better.  Case in point: let’s say you’re at a cool store in a different town, you can add a geographical location to your pin.  This feature would be helpful to remind you where you were and to also tell others who may be interested in buying this product.

As with all geo-tagging posts or photos, be smart!

Red Laser

Red Laser is one of my favorite and most-used apps.  When I first got my iPhone, this was one of the first apps I used.

imageWho doesn’t love to scan their own items!?  This app is primarily used to scan upc barcodes to find prices.  They’ve updated the app to where you can now “favorite” or “add to list.”  If you’re shopping for a big ticket item or looking to find the best deal, Red Laser comes in handy.

After scanning an item in the store, you can see how much it’s offered else where.  Beware though, sometimes, the app will show pricing from Ebay or another retailer that may make it hard to pricematch.  One of my favorite updates to this app is that you can now input loyalty cards.  I love that all 5 billion of my loyalty cards will now have a home on my phone, rather than in my bulging wallet.

Time to Play Shop For Kids App

New to the shopping app scene: my friends at TimetoPlayMag.com recently debuted the “Shop for Kids” App.  This app is quite timely as we descend on the toy stores and big box retailers while we’re on the hunt for the must-have goodies and gadgets.  The free app gives you access to TTP’s credible reviews, as well as provides a live price comparison tool and a link to their daily giveaways.  According to a recent article on Bloomberg, EMarketer points out: “Mobile devices can drive two ways—by allowing users to buy items on their smartphones and tables, and as research tool that could lead to in-store purchases.”

imageimage
On a recent “research” trip to Target, I strolled the boy toy aisles in search of something fun for my older guy.  Biggie is all into TMNT like many boys his age, but WHICH vehicle would excite him the most this Christmas?  I pulled up the Shop for Kids App and scan two different versions of the Shellraiser vehicle.  Through the app, I found that TMNT Shellraiser Vehicle is $17.99 online yet on the shelf (as seen in my picture), it’s $23.49. That’s a $5.50 difference!
image

Granted, online prices are different than in-store prices, but sometimes you can find a much better deal online AND free shipping.  Back to the Shellraiser, because I couldn’t decide between two different vehicles, I loved that the “Shop for Kids” App provides reviews, which, for me, is often the tiebreaker!  Since the RC Shellraiser had better reviews, I added that toy to my aforementioned Pinterest Christmas list. The Shop for Kids App is available for both iOs and Android.

With the accessibility to shopping apps via smartphones, shopping in-store has never been easier.  Happy shopping!  If you score a great deal with one of the above apps, let me know!

Classroom Fun: Oh, The Places You’ll Go and Oceanhouse Media Dr. Seuss Apps

As Read Across America week winds down, I thought I’d share about my fun afternoon with J’s class today.

Untitled

Dr. Seuss reminded us that Life’s a Great Balancing Act (Just never forget to be dexterous and deft).  Which is why I chose to read Oh, The Places You Go! in class today.  In my trajectory as a writer and parent, I want to believe that it was his suggestions and wise words that have pointed me in this direction. (More on this later…)

Even though Oh, The Places You’ll Go! can be verbose for young five year olds, the class very much understood Dr. Seuss’ ideas and emphasis on imagination.
After reading to the class, we continued the conversation about Dr. Seuss with What’s in the Cat’s Hat, a hands-on game game from my friends at Wonder Forge.

This game is a classic guessing game, where the kids can utilize their senses by guessing what’s hidden IN the Cat’s hat.  Each kid took a turn poking and shaking the hat, even reading off prompted questions from the cards.  We heard silly guesses, but once the kids started getting their guesses right based on clues, the momentum of their deductive reasoning started to roll. I can’t say enough good things about Wonder Forge; this fantastic company has won numerous awards for their games and it’s no wonder why. Beyond What’s in the Cat’s Hat, Wonder Forge has various Dr. Seuss puzzles and games, including an app-centric game called Fun Machine.

Dr. Seuss apps from Oceanhouse Media

And speaking of apps, Dr. Seuss has an app—quite a few, actually.  Oceanhouse Media has done a great job with bringing Dr. Seuss titles to iPhones, iPods and iPads.  While I love my technology as much as the next geek, there’s nothing quite like a real book.  Nevertheless, you can’t beat having access to a myriad of Dr. Seuss titles while on the go.  Green Eggs and Ham while in the dentist waiting room? Why not.  Fox in Socks while on a 2-hour road trip? Don’t mind if we do.  The best part of these apps is that they’re interactive where you can record your voice while reading and even share those recordings.  Oceanhouse Media has a number of Dr. Seuss classics in the $3-5 range, as well as a few free apps.

Dr. Seuss Camera

Another app that gets rave reviews from my favorite five year olds: The Dr. Seuss Camera, also from Oceanhouse Media. This app simply utilizes the iphone, ipod touch or ipad camera and frames the subject with several different Dr. Seuss characters and imagery.  Point, shoot, edit and create, this app is endless Dr. Seuss fun and is free.  This app is a great way to continue the Dr. Suess conversation and branch it out to digital media.  In fact, we took pictures of J’s entire class and the kids had a blast picking and choosing which characters they wanted to be.  Sally, by the way, was the class favorite—for boys, too!  Go, Sally!

I loved talking to the kids about my job today.  Since most of the kids aren’t reading quite yet, I didn’t bother telling them about NKT, other than the topics that I focus on.  It was cute getting questions from parents asking me if I work FOR PBS.  No, but I am a proud VIP.

App Review: RedRover is Great for Parents on the Go

In this day and age of the digital mom, it’s much easier to get in touch now, more than ever.

We moms now have a plethora of apps, tablets, smart phones, and gadgets that make motherhood “easier”—or at least a little more manageable!  And for those in the playgroup circuit, we now have forward-thinking apps like RedRover to keep us even more connected to our groups, make play dates on the spot,  keep us informed of the latest and greatest in our community, a head’s up on clean restrooms and even tune us into emergency info, should we ever need it.  Genius, no?

As a new mom in my suburban community, I’ve had my fair share of issues of getting around and fitting in.  I’ve already added all of our family’s favorite parks, shops and locales.  I can’t wait to discover what other families love, too.

What I love about RedRover is that it’s very user-friendly, a great alternative to Facebook and email, not to mention, it’s overflowing with all the information that I need right away.  No more digging through emails or searching contact lists.  What would make this app even better for me?  Is if ALL of my fun parent friends downloaded it and/or got smartphones already.  This app is a definite must-have for parents on the go and in the know!

To get the RedRover app be sure to head to iTunes to download.  Want to see RedRover in action?  Check out RedRover’s video.

Good Stuff

Not only is RedRover a must-have app for parents on the go, but they’re backing their techy goodness with a philanthropic element.  I appreciate that RedRover is donating $1 for every download from July 14-26 to Christy Turnlington’s charity, EveryMotherCounts.org

Full disclosure:  I am being compensated for my review of this app, but as always, opinions on NKT are my own.

NKT at CES 2011

Howdy from Las Vegas, everyone!  As everyone was gearing up for the New Year and packing up their Christmas decor, I was fielding emails, setting up appointments and mentally preparing myself for the Consumer Electronics Show, the world’s largest technology conference.

What’s a blogger—more specifically, a blogger who focuses on kid stuff—doing at a tech conference?

I’m doing what most other members of the press are doing: checking out and reporting on the latest innovations in technology.  Most importantly, what I’m here for, is to learn about all this new technology and how it intersects with families and kids.

This holiday season, I noticed that more and more handhelds for kids and gadgets lined the shelves of big box electronic stores.  In the age of iPads and smartphones, apps help our kids to read stories, tablets are being harnessed for educational purposes and moms…well, we’re still doing most of the buying decisions, especially when it comes to technology throughout the entire house.  It’s more than evident that technology is embraced by the entire family, with mom and kids influencing a good portion of the techy marketplace, now more than ever.

With CES officially opening today, I be on the look out for a superfluous amount of #CES tweets, my pictures on Flickr, and of course, some blog posts all about the family friendly tech gear that I find on the showroom floor.

Making Music with Monster Melody Mash

What do you get when you mix dancing monsters and fun beats?  Why, an app, of course!

We’ve been playing with another monster-centric app, or rather, jamming out.  This time, the kid and I have been playing DJ with the Monster Melody App.  Choosing between alien, volcano or classic monsters, players can create endless melodies by tapping the sychronizing monsters. Perfect for budding djs and even the littlest music aficionados, Monster Melody app harnesses music, playful animation and touch-screen technology to create musical goodness.

I know.  More monsters!  I’m on a monster kick lately…or should I say, developers and toy manufacturers are on a monster roll.

Halloween’s over and you know what that means?  That’s right, the Holiday shopping season cranks up a notch.  While the shelves might have been touting dancing Santas and singing reindeers for a few weeks now, marketers and retailers have been working overtime for months in preparation for the upcoming Holiday season.

As mentioned before, many of us bloggers were attending holiday previews way back in May, so, be prepared to see an influx of holiday coverage on blogs this year, NKT included.

We can’t cover holiday shopping without highlighting the thrill of the hunt—for kids, that is!  While many of us plan to scour the malls, websites and shops for the best deals, in many cases, it all starts with that carefully-crafted Christmas list.  And guess what?

Of course, there’s an app for that.

Mouth off with the Moshi Monster MouthOff App

With Halloween this weekend, I’m sure many of you, like us, have monsters on the brain.  And you guessed it—there’s an app for that.

The Moshi Monsters MouthApp app is a spinoff of the children’s online game, Moshi Monsters from Mind Candy. The Moshi Monster MouthOff App, which is available for the iPhone and iPod touch, is a whimsical, animated app where monsters’ mouths animate and mimic your voice.  You and the kids can choose from the six different Moshi Monsters to mouth off.

We had a riot playing around with the MouthOff App, with Poppet and Zommer being the kid’s favorites.  At $1.99, this app is a silly way to pass time, have a laugh or add some color to trick or treating, like my boy hopes to do!

Check it

Are you a Ben 10 fan like us?  There’s a free Ben 10 MouthOff Lite app, which is developed by ustwo, the same creative people who developed the Moshi Monster MouthOff App.

On Monday, CNN via Health.com reported that a new study revealed what many of us already speculated about pesticides being linked to ADHD in children.

The article said :

Children exposed to higher levels of a type of pesticide found in trace amounts on commercially grown fruit and vegetables are more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder than children with less exposure, a nationwide study suggests.

PBS Kids Launches Photo Factory App

Always a fan of fun, free apps, the kid and I are quite excited about PBS Kids’ recently launched Photo Factory App.

With the PBS Kids’ Photo Factory App, kids can customize their photos with various PBS characters and then email, save or share so the whole world can check out their creations.  Kids can choose characters from Arthur, Caillou, Clifford, Curious George, Dinosaur Train, Dragon Tales, Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman, Sesame Street, Sid the Science Kid (my favorite!), Super Why! and Wordgirl to accent their photos; the choices are endless, really!

What I love about this app, other than it being free, is that it’s so user and kid friendly.  The graphics are fun, the pictures are colorful and it’s yet another way to keep my guy entertained on bus and train rides.  Oh, and we have even more ways to customize pictures to assign to my contacts in my phone!  Who wouldn’t smile at a picture of Grandpa adorned with a little Clifford?

PBS, you guys think of everything, don’t you?

The PBS Photo Factory App is available absolutely free to download in the app store.  For more info. on all PBS apps, check out their mobile site.
